    Description

    IN BOLD MEASURE
The Biography of Col. Benjamin Lyons Farinholt, CSA
    by D. Thomas Wessells, Jr.
Fate placed Farinholt in the center of major events from the siege of Yorktown to the surrender at Appomattox. He met with Lee and Davis. Farinholt fought in most of the major battles in Virginia. He breached the union lines at the bloody angle with Armistead at Gettysburg where he was wounded and captured. He escaped ten months of confinement at Johnson Island Military Prison, making his way from Ohio to Richmond to reenter the war. As commander of the post at Staunton River Bridge in 1864, he saved Lee's only supply line to Richmond and Petersburg. Using an irregular force made up of wounded veterans, boys, old men and what soldiers he could find, he fended off four Union attacks by veteran cavalry four times the size of his force. Ending the war as a twenty-six-year-old colonel, Farinholt prospered as a businessman during Reconstruction. He remained a patriot of both the Confederacy and the United States for the remainder of his eventful life. Farinholt as tale, much of it in his own words, is so compelling that readers will need to remind themselves that this is not a work of fiction; it really happened.
